Arsenal begin talks to make £36.8m-rated attacker first January signing

Arsenal are reported to have made contact with Real Madrid over a potential transfer for Colombian ace James Rodriguez. Rodriguez is currently on loan at German outfit Bayern Munich but has struggled for consistency this season.

The 27-year-old has failed to convince coach Niko Kovac of his place in the first team. Kovac has challenged the player to fight for a place in the squad. However Rodriguez was frustrated in the last game against Hoffenheim as he was brought in as a late substitute.

Arsenal are looking to take advantage of the current situation and have sent intermediaries to negotiate a loan deal for the former Monaco midfielder. According to the Independent, Real Madrid are open to selling but could look to use the player as a leverage for new signings.

It is understood that the Madrid giants are looking at selling the £38million rated star to Tottenham as it could help in swaying the club to sell Christian Eriksen in the summer. Rodriguez is undoubtedly a talented player and Arsenal would benefit immensely from the player.

Arsenal also remain in negotiations with Barcelona over the transfer of Denis Suarez and the club are hopeful of an agreement before next Monday.
