Manchester United are reported to be closing in on the transfer of highly rated Roma defender Kostas Manolas. Manchester United need for defensive replacements was a major highlight during the ill-fated tenure of Jose Mourinho this season and the club is looking towards a long-term solution.
According to Spanish tabloid, Marca, United are interested in the 27-year-old and are preparing a bid to lure the defender to Old Trafford. Manolas has developed into one of the top defenders in Italy alongside Koulibaly and Skriniar.
The tough-tackling defender has become a stable influence in the defence since his move from Olympiacos some few seasons back. United have become a better outfit under the management of Solskjaer but there are still concerns about the backline. Chris Smalling, Eric Bailly and Phil Jones have failed to match the heights of last season.
Furthermore, the Red Devils have conceded the most goals among the top six teams and Manolas is seen as a long-term solution.
The Greek star has a release clause reported to be around £30.7million which can only be activated in the summer. It remains to be seen if the Old Trafford side would be willing to pay a little extra to get their man in January.
