Chelsea are close to agreeing on a move for Juventus forward Gonzalo Higuain but coach Maurizio Sarri wants to add a midfielder to the squad in January. Chelsea long-term target Higuain is understood to have agreed on a deal to move to London and a medical is planned in the next 48 hours.
Despite this significant transfer arrival, Sarri is keen on adding a midfielder to supplement his current options following the departure of Cesc Fabregas to Monaco.
The Blues are currently negotiating with Zenit St Petersburg for Argentine ace Leandro Paredes. Paredes is expected to cost within the region of £31 million and has already hinted on Twitter that a move is close.
Calgiari youngster Nicolo Barella was also a major target but talks appear to have cooled down after Cagliari ruled out a move for the player. Sarri wants a midfielder that can act as a capable deputy for midfield ace Jorginho who appears to be struggling at the moment.
The Italian international was marked out in the recent defeat to Arsenal on Sunday and Sarri wants an alternative option.
Paredes appears most likely to join Higuain at Stamford Bridge in the coming days as the Blues push for a return to the Champions League this season.
