SkySports pundit Paul Merson has ordered Chelsea Italian coach to sign a central forward in January.
This came as a response to Alvaro Morata’s one on one miss against Crystal Palace that would have earned him a hat trick.
The Spaniard has come under serious criticism for his lackadaisical performances until his recent return to form which has seen him bag for goals in four league games including the brace against Palace.
But former Arsenal hero, Merson is not convinced of the player’s ability to muster 20-25 goals a season and here comes the need to grab a goalscorer.
The likes of Giroud, Pedro and Willian have very few goals to show for their industry but an out-and-out attacker would guarantee a quarter of a hundred goals at least.
Merson’s bone here isn’t the quality of Morata but his commitment and work rate. He believes the striker should be more clinical in front of goal especially in one vs one situations.
“They need a forward though, come what January,” Merson said.
“You know what summed it up for me more than anything last Saturday that they need a centre-forward?
“He’s going through one-on-one with the keeper to get his hat-trick.
“(Alan) Shearer, (Michael) Owen, (Robbie) Fowler, (Ian) Wright, (Harry) Kane – they roll the ball down the side (and score).”
Other pundits have quickly jumped to the defence of the player regarding the missed chance to make the scoreline more glossy against Palace.
